School building formerly a private house. c1720, large dormitory
wing 1865 by Matthew Digby Wyatt, older part altered 1879. Red
brick with red tiled gabled roofs. An L-shaped 3-storeys
building with the oldest part, at the angle, a double pile plan
C18 house with parallel gabled roofs E-W. 4-windows S front with
sash windows, segmental arches and modular cornice. Entrance in
E end early C19 and arches for cellar openings. Semi-circular
attic window to rear wing. Large 3-storeys purpose designed
dormitory block added on W end projecting to S to allow for a
tall entrance turret in the angle at the N. Its open lower part
is of Venetian Gothic arches springing from a fat cast iron
column with stone tas-de-charge. Original wrought iron grille
in Gothic style. Heavy brick corbelled eaves, stone floor bands,
a row of triangular gabled dormers, close set sash windows to the
dormitory. Larger more widely spaced windows on ground floor.
Stone corbelling to W gable chimney. Rear wing 1879 simpler.
This house pre-dates the college and was the residence of Rev.
T R Malthus when a professor at the East India College
(Haileybury). One of the first Wisterias in Britain is said to
have been planted at the Hailey House in the early C19. Part of
a picturesque red brick group E of the main Quad. (Matthews
(1959) 165-6 : Blunt (1966) 5, 12, 28).
