GV II*

Large country house. Late C15 or early C16 wing; remainder
principally C17 with late C17 west porch; C18 south wing. Random
rubble limestone with ashlar dressings; coursed and squared rubble
to C18 wing; stone slate roof. Long west-facing C17 range of 2
storeys with attic; central 2-storey porch; central staircase
plan to south wing of 2 storeys with attic; 2-storey north east
wing. West front: central porch has ovolo moulded doorway with
plank door and 2-light ovolo moulded mullioned window over; small
upper floor ovolo moulded single-light windows to porch sides;
additional chamfered single-light below to right. Scattered
fenestration left of porch: large small-paned casement with timber
lintel to each floor; C19 roof dormer with barge boards; further
left offset buttress and gabled end of cross-wing which has single-
window fenestration; larger timber casement to upper floor with 2-
light ovolo moulded mullioned window and flat drip stone over to
attic; lean-to outbuildings attached below. Full gable to right
of porch with single window fenestration: large C19 3-light
mullioned window with hoodmould has small single-light C19 to left
also with hood; 3-light recessed chamfered with hood above and 2-
light attic window; blocked single-light high in parapet gable;
blocked doorway to right with blocked oval window over set
horizontally; 2-light to upper floor over; central ridge-mounted
chimney is ashlar, partly rebuilt in yellow brick. West gable end
of south range has ashlar chimney with moulded cap at parapet
gable; C18 upper floor sash with moulded architrave and keystone;
C19 canted bay below with moulded cornice to parapet and
architraves with keystones to each window; 2 C19 sashes in front
face and single to each side. South front: 3-window 2-storey
facade with central projecting single-storey C19 porch; sashes
have moulded architraves, stepped keytones and bull-nosed sills; 2
door leaves each of 2 fielded panels to porch, and 2 side casements
all with architraves and keystones to match sashes; panel dated
1908 central over doorway with architrave, keystone and central
flower decoration; curve to parapet over. East side: blocked
window to upper floors of end parapet gable to C18 south range
having architraves and keystone; otherwise fenestration is
generally scattered; chimney with moulded cap and skirt to parapet
gable at back of C18 range; central chimney gable on elevation has
rebuilt ashlar stack with moulded cap and skirt; 2 upper floor 2-
light recessed chamfered mullioned windows to left of chimney gable
with single 3-light mullioned window below; C19 roof dormer with
leaded casement above; to right of chimney gdble 2-window
fenestration: C19 roof dormers, 3-light upper floor windows and
altered fenestration to ground floor with inserted doorway. North
wing projects to east and has scattered fenestration: two 2-light
windows with Tudor-arched heads face south; stepped chimney stack
on east gable with single Tudor-arched light either side, that to
left has single-light square-headed chamfered window above; north
side of wing has C19 3-light with Tudor-arched heads and original
2-light below. North gable end of main range has altered
fenestration and concrete steps to upper floor doorway.
Interior of early east wing has large basket-arched fireplace in
ground floor room and a single raised cruck to roof. Open well
staircase to C18 house with moulded open strings, wreathed handrail
terminals and stick balusters; fielded panelled shutters to sash
windows. Every century has seen an addition to the original house
dating from about 1500 so that the effect is one of accumulation.
