Farmhouse. C17. Principally exposed rubble (formerly rendered) with stone
slate roof; one large stone stack near centre, dividing to two diagonal shafts,
plus brick stacks either end. Large free-standing L-shaped building with two
Cotswold gables, all under very steep pitches; sign of straight joint near right
end, possibly central block extended in both directions. Two storeys plus roof
storey lit from gables and one dormer on reverse slope; five windowed, all C19
wood casements variously two and three-light. Left of centre recent porch gives
on way through to door at back. Ground floor series of heavy beams with chamfer
and decorated stops; large open fireplace with bread oven right hand room; another
backing on to through passage (now incorporated in central room). Very wide C18
stair dividing at landing; large handrail and thick turned balusters, all in local
carpenter's style in oak. Roof collars give over six feet headroom throughout.
Unusually thick walling at left (south) end, and floor at this end below ground
level. Building reputed to have connections with Civil War.
