Public house. Mid to late C16, extended shortly thereafter. Further
extended, floored and heated mid C17. Altered C19. Timber frame,
roughcast and rendered, some exposed framing. Tiled roofs. Originally an
open hall with an upper cross wing. 1 storey and attic. Taller 2 storey
2 bay block added at upper end. Small lower cross wing added later.
Original screens passage entrance to left blocked with stack inserted on
front pitch. Entrance now at upper end of hall with steps and iron
railings up to 6 panelled door with moulded jambs, fanlight. To left of
this is a C19 canted bay window with 12:16:12 pane sashes, flat head.
Above a 3 light gabled dormer. Original cross wing to right is jettied
with a ground floor C19 canted bay window as on hall, first floor 3
light casement, exposed plates, 2 bays added to right in same plane as
cross wing first floor. Steps up to a raised entrance with a half glazed
door, ground floor 16 pane flush frame sash. First floor two 2 light
small pane casements. Cross axial ridge stack where this range meets
original cross wing. Right gable end has some exposed framing on ground
floor, exposed plates. To left front is lower and narrower later cross
wing with small pane casements, jettied first floor with a curved
bracket, exposed plates. Left return has exposed framing, rebuilt with
brick infill on ground floor, thin scantling above with scattered small
pane casements. Rear gable end of later cross wing has a jowled post, 2
light dormer on inner return. Original cross wing has a hipped roof to
rear linking to first addition to rear of which is a C19 slate roofed
addition. Interior: exposed framing with jowled posts, cambered tie
beams, close studding and passing tension braces. (RCHM 1910).
