Detached house. Mid C17, extended or rebuilt late C17. Right-hand
bay mid C17; coursed thinly-bedded limestone, interspersed with
courses of deeply bedded squared and dressed limestone. Late C17
bays on left large blocks of coursed squared and dressed limestone.
Stone slate roof with ashlar stacks. Rectangular plan with gable
end to road and extension with catslide roof at the rear. Two
storeys and attic, lit by two 2-light roof dormers with leaded
panes. Three-windowed facade; two 2-light flat-chamfered stone-
mullioned casements to the left-hand bay. Two hollow-chamfered
stone-mullioned casements to the right-hand bay. Single-light
window with a double-chamfered surround over door. Stopped hoods
over all windows. C19 plank door off-centre left with a large
dressed stone lintel. Blocked 2-light stone-mullioned casement
with stoppedhood to the first floor of the gable end facing the
road. Gable-end stacks with cappings and skirtings. Interior not
inspected. Coursed squared and dressed limestone wall c3m in
height forms a small rectangular enclosure at the rear contains C19
plank door within a flat-chamfered Tudor-arched surround with
inscription 'BERKS / VAGRANT CELLS / GLOSSHIRE'. Shuttered opening
to right of doorway. The enclosure probably functioned as a form
of lock-up. (Barrington Park Estate). Part of the then parish of
Great Barrington was until 1844 a detached part of Berkshire.
