Farmhouse. Marked as Barrington Farmhouse on the 6 inch O.S. Map.
Late C17. Coursed squared and finely dressed limestone. Stone
slate roof with ashlar stacks. Rectangular plan to main body with
later extension at right angles at rear to form a 'T'. Lean-tos
later added to sides of extension at rear. Main body; Two storeys
and attic. Symmetrical, 1:3:1-windowed facade with central gable
flanked by two stone-built dormers from eaves. Central gable and
dormers lit by bulls-eye windows with raised flat-chamfered
surrounds. Outer bays lit by tall 3-light double-chamfered stone-
mullioned casements. Central three bays lit by similar 2-light
stone-mullioned casments. All casements with leaded panes. Bands
over the ground and first floor windows have superimposed moulded
hoods over each window (q.v. Park Farmhouse, Great Barrington
Village). Central C20 two-panel door within a raised segmental-
headed surround with keystone extended up to interrupt band.
Saddleback coping to gables and dormers. Finial to central gable
comprises a large sundial in the form of a square block with metal
gnomons on three sides. Small ball finials to the flanking
dormers. Saddleback coping to gable ends and dormers. Gable-end
stacks with moulded cappings and skirtings. Two and 3-light stone-
mullioned casements with leaded panes and stopped hoods to
extension to rear.
Interior; large open fireplace with dressed stone surround and
inglenook seat on the right. Small fireplace with late C19-early
C20 moulded stone surround. Early C18 open well staircase with
turned balusters and closed string to attic. Beams with beaded
mouldings close studded partition over stair well at attic level.
Original roof timbers with carpenters marks.
