GV II

Late C19. Tall square tower with symmetrical/identical facades. Pyramid slate
roof, incorporating diaper patterns. The parapet has a moulded stone saw-tooth
top (7 spikes each face) with small stone finials placed diagonally at the
corners. Walling is in red brick (Flemish bond) with patterns in flush black
brickwork, including, near the top, vertical lines below each point in the para-
pet, intermediate diamonds, larger diamonds between 2 horizontal bands. The
middle stage has 3 very tall narrow recesses, each continuing one window above
another with painted openings, the main arch being tile-hung within the top
and bottom marked by a black line across the facade, carried over the opening
as alternating black and red voussoirs. The lowest stage has a central doorway,
the black hood-mould to the pointed arch continuing from impost level as a hori-
zontal line, which serves as a cill to a small window on each side, having a
trefoil opening with stone voussoirs marking the points, and a horizontal band
linking impost level. Wide horizontal black bands give a "rusticated" effect
to the base section, which finishes on a high plinth. On the west side there
is an attached chimney stack, narrowing towards the top by means of set-offs
and projecting bands. On the north side a single-storeyed projecting unit,
with a castellated parapet and 3 windows within cambered openings, linked at
impost level by black bands. The east side has a larger later extension.
