Small hall house, late C15/early C16, altered in C17 and C20. Timber framed,
plastered, roof thatched. 2-bay hall aligned NW-SE with integral service end
to NW and integral storeyed parlour/solar to SE. Lean-to extension at NW end
of rear wall, C18/19, at SE end of rear wall, C20. Small extension to NW, C20.
Single storey with attics. SW elevation, C20 porch roofed with red clay Roman
tiles, 2 C19 casement windows, one C20 casement window. 2 tiled gabled dormers
with C19 casement windows. Some framing exposed internally. Original floor
of lodged joists of horizontal section at SE end. Inserted floors in hall and
NW end, axial beams ovolo-moulded with lamb's tongue stops, exposed joists on
pegged clamps, early C17. Inserted brick chimney stack at NW end of hall
consisting of 2 hearths of different builds back to back, late C16 and early
C17, forming a lobby-entrance. .Jowled posts. Central tiebeam missing, other 2
internal tiebeams severed for inserted doorways. Wall painting on NW wall of
solar in red ochre on white, of deer and the initials SM - MM - TM - RM with
cross-hatched bands above and below. Good late C16 door in rear wall of hall,
of moulded radially-cut planks on ledges, with original Suffolk latch and pistol
bolt. Bread oven partly demolished. Medieval pine door, heavily nailed, on C20
NW extension. This is an unusually unaltered small hall house with many early
features.
