Cottage, c.1600, extended in C17, C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roof
thatched. 2 bays aligned approx. E-W with axial chimney stack at E end. C17
one-bay extension at E end. C19 extension to N of E end, with catslide roof.
C20 lean-to extension along remainder of N side, with roof of modern tiles.
S elevation, 3 C20 casement windows and one more in swept dormer. Roof hipped
at E end. The interior has jowled posts, straight bracing inside heavy
studding, face-halved and bladed scarf in S wallplate, wattle and daub infill,
of which one panel in the N wall is exposed behind glass. A continuous axial
beam spans both original bays, plain-chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The
joists are of horizontal section, unchamfered. The ground floor partition
between the bays has been removed. E tiebeam removed or severed for inserted
doorway. Original rafters, exposed in W bay. Large wood-burning hearth reduced
for C20 grate. The original access was from Churchfields, to the S, and this
building is attributed to Churchfields in the 1952 schedule, but the present
access is from Water Lane, to the N.
