My mother, Gwen Rae, worked at Hampers when she was in the Womens Land Army during the War. She wrote "One day one of the farmers wanted a girl to work in his dairy. I volunteered and went to live in a farm house called Hampers at Little Maplestead. Mr and Mrs Dixey were my land lords, My Dixey (Dick) was the head horse man and the horses were kept at Hampers. The dairy was at Maplestead Hall. I used to cycle to work. The milking started at 6am and then again at 3pm every day."
