Luggard's Cottage
II
Pair of attached cottages, now one house. Early C19. Roughcast rendered,
roofed with slate. Rectangular plan facing W, with shared stack in front pitch
of roof. 2 storeys. 2-window range of original sashes of 16 lights, with
handmade glass. 4-panelled door to right cottage, doorway of left cottage
blocked and rendered over. In each side elevation one original sash of 3+6
lights at each storey. Plain boarded door to rear. This is an exceptionally
unaltered example of its type. Described as 'now consisting of 2 newly erected
cottages' in the court rolls of Walton's manor, 5 June 1837 (Essex Record
Office, D/DHR M115).
