11.11.52 II
Farmhouse. A 1718 remodelling of an older house. Roughcast cob, stone footings,
and hipped slate roof. Formerly a 3-room, through-passage plan with a rear wing at
the service end. Service end to left of passage is heated by an external end stack;
hall heated by an originally external rear lateral stack; the inner room probably
remained unheated until the insertion of the C19 or C20 internal end stack; rear
wing with end stack. All stacks with brick shafts, that to the service-end
plastered. 2 storeys.
Front: regular 4-window range; all windows have C19 20-pane horned sashes, but the
openings are probably the work of 1718; 1 to each of the 3 ground-floor rooms; wide
doorway to passage; canopy looks early C19 with cornice, modillions, triglyphs and
3 little plaster paterae, all supported on plain posts with simple capitals.
Immediately above the porch is a datestone, 'PMT 1718', which was originally placed
at eaves level.
Left-hand elevation: the end stack is exceptionally wide; wing with 2 and 3-light
casement windows, and a C19 doorway with a canopy on shaped brackets. The rear of
the house has been largely obscured by C20 accretions under a corrugated asbestos
roof. Interior not inspected. Apparently the roof timbers are not visible in the
upper rooms.
