2/13 Barn approximately 8 metres north-
west of Great Auncke Manor
11.11.52
GV II
Barn. Late C17, reroofed in the c19. Local hand-made red brick including some
burnt headers and laid to a random bond but tending to Flemish bond; red tile roof,
formerly thatch.
Double barn on a north-south axis containing 2 sets of opposing full height doorways
onto the threshing floors. The doorways on the east side are flanked by short
projecting midstrey walls. The joinery of the doors includes some very old flaps.
The roof is gable-ended although it seems that the south end was originally half-
hipped. A window in the north end occupies a former hayloft loading hatch.
Interior: is open to the roof which is carried on a series of C19 replacement A-
frame trusses.
This barn is contemporary with the main house and an early example of a brick
building in rural Devon.
