Public house. C18 with C19 and C20 extensions. The older section is plastered cob
on stone rubble footings, the C20 extension is whitewashed brick; stone rubble and
brick stacks; thatch roof.
Plan and development: U-plan building with the main block facing south. The C18
house occupies the right end of the main block. It has a 2-room plan with a wide
central passage. The right room has an end stack (now disused). The left end wall
has been demolished to enlarge the bar area. The rest of the main block is the C20
bar and it returns into a rear block behind the left (west) end. This rear block
has an outside lateral stack. A service block projects at right angles to rear of
the left end. This is a C19 barn which has been converted and brought into domestic
use. The building is mostly 2 storeys but the C20 bar extension is single storey.
Exterior: three 3-window front. The older part (the right end) contains some C19
casements with glazing bars but most are C20 casements. The front doorway is right
of centre (in the middle of the older part) and it contains C19 door behind a C20
gabled porch. The roof is gable-ended to right, the ridge line rises over the older
part and is hipped to right.
Interior: carpentry detail is only exposed in the right room of the old house. The
2 crossbeams here are unfinished tree trunks and probably are inserted or
replacment beams. The fireplace is stone rubble with a cambered oak lintel;
chamfered with runout stops. Roof not inspected.
