Terrace of 8 houses and attached railings to Nos 68 and 74.
c1806-35. Stucco over brick with mansard slate roof to No.72,
otherwise concealed; brick and stucco party-wall stacks with
cornices; iron porch to No. 72 and railings and balconies.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and basements, with attics to No.72, 16
first-floor windows (2 per house). Stucco detailing includes
rustication drawn into voussoirs over openings to ground floor
of 5 houses at right (Nos 74-82); continuous first-floor band;
5 houses to right have tooled architraves to first-floor
windows; continuous frieze, cornice and blocking course.
Mainly 6/6 sashes where original and some 8/8 sashes;
basements have 8/8 sashes where original. Entrances: 4 to left
and 4 to right: 4- and 6-panel doors, some part-glazed, those
5 to left have fanlights (some blind, some with radial
glazing), otherwise with overlights. Attics: c1900 roof
dormers.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor individual balconies
throughout, except to No.82, have rod-and-central-circle
motif, rod-and-anthemion motif, lattice, and embellished rod
and scroll frieze with central scroll panel motifs. Railings:
those to No.74 have stick balusters to side of house and with
X-motif area railings; lancet railings to left (No.68) extend
for approx 2m.
HISTORICAL NOTE: a complete terrace row of single-fronted
early C19 houses. Fairview Road was developed from c1806; it
occupies part of the open fields 'inclosed' by Act of
Parliament in 1806 to enable their development as building
land.
