Manor House. Mid C16, late C17, C18 and C19. Timber-framed,roughcast
rendered, red brick and grey brick. Tiled and slate roofs. Late C17 side
stack of red brick with in ed shafts. Two bays remain of an H-plan mansion
built in mid C16, roof raised and third storey added late C17, extended by
addition of wings to the north in late C17. Mostly demolished early C19.
Three storeys. South front has late C17 red brick casing and original
banding between the storeys. Early C19 inserted windows. Banding continued
to east front which is also of three storeys with raised surrounds to three
window openings, mostly blocked, to each storey. Late C17 balcony with C19
iron balustrade to first floor. Main entry now in late C17 or early C20
rustic porch. Fenestration on this front, now rendered, is late C19.
Adjoining on the north is late C17 kitchen range, also timber-framed and part
red brick. C19 grey brick additions have been made. Inside. Timber-framing
exposed of mid C16 house. Heavy scantling and curved downward bracing.
Hearth of clunch with four centred arch in square head with partly carved
spandrels. Scratching of 1555 which may be he date of the house. Abutting
hearth is also of clunch. The house 'was built by Thomas Wendy (d.1540),
physician to Henry VIII, and remodelled by Sir Thomas Wendy, K B (d.1673).
The original fireplace and staircase were moved to Bourn Hall, Bourn, Cambs.
during the demolition in early C19, and other materials have been reused in
No. 39 High Street (The Maltings) (qv) and Oak Cottage, No. 13 Broad Lane
(qv) and in Cantelupe Farmhouse, Cantelupe Road, c.1820.
