II
East lock with restored gates, one of pair of locks where the St
Helens Canal joins the River Mersey at Spike Island, 1833 with later
alterations and repairs. The locks control a difference in water
level of 12' between canal and river level. Constructed of large
timber with massive posts and rails; the canal end gate with catwalk.
Gate restoration to east lock and removal of gates and sealing of
north end of west lock formed part of an enhancement scheme in 1981.
