Market hall. Mid/Late C18. Plum coloured Flemish bond brick with
slate roof and ashlar dressings. Two storeys. Entrance front: 5
bays with slightly projecting lateral bays, stone plinth and quoins
and band between floors. C20 doorway at left with glazed door and
pedimental surround. The right hand ground floor projection
encompasses both right hand bays and has a round arched driveway with
stone springers set low (a later alteration probably dating from the
walling of the ground floor which was previously open). To the centre
are two arches of the original triple-arched market space. Tuscan
pillar to centre and 1/2-pillar at right both with entasis. The first
floor has 5 sash windows of 3 x 4 panes with stone sills and
flat-arched lintels with key stones. Cornice above with central
slightly projecting broken pediment. Hipped roof. To the left is a
driveway with a first floor link to the Swan Hotel (q.v.). Under this
driveway on the right hand side are two large oval panels with moulded
surrounds.
Interior: The ground floor, which was an open market area has Tuscan
pillars. The first floor room has some painted panelling and is now
connected to the Swan Hotel (q.v.) and used as the dining room of the
Cheshire Hunt.
