Cemetery chapels. 1860-80. Red random bond brick with diapering of
blue bricks and bands of encaustic tiles with alternating bands of red
and blue slates to the roof. Two funeral chapels connected by a range
of porches, archway and bell tower. Road front: projecting plinth
common to whole building with chamfered ashlar top. Pointed archway
at right of centre with double chamfered rebate with a gable above
which has a row of patterned encaustic tiles sandwiched between rows
of blue bricks. To the gable apex is an octagonal panel in relief
showing Christ in the act of blessing the congregation. To the left
of this is the square bell tower which has a clasping buttress to the
left hand corner and a quatrefoil to its lower body with ashlar
surround and a pointed lancet above and a louvred lancet above that to
the bell chamber. Square spire above of slate. The chapel porches
lie to either side of this with lancet windows. To right and left of
this central range both chapels have gable ends. Both chapels have
angle buttresses to the corners and a central double doorway with
pilarettes to either side with crocketed capitals and bands of
encaustic tiles at the level of the capitals. Chamfered door reveals
and ashlar hood moulds with figurehead label stops. The buttresses
have ashlar offsets and to the gables are windows of plate tracery
having three lancet lights to the lower body and circular lights
above. Bands of encaustic tiles at the level of their sills and at
the springing of the arches. Bands of blue brick to the upper body of
both gables and crosses to the apexes. The sides have lancet lights
with buttresses between and the western gable ends (ritual East) have
paired lancets with an oval light above. The interior of both chapels
has diapering and bands of encaustic tiles to the walls and floors of
richly patterned encaustic tiling and panelled wooden roofs.
