Public house, circa 1800 with a little C17 work. Brown brick; grey
slate roof. 2 storeys; 4 windows; the left bay is of darker brickwork
with unbroken vertical joint. Lower storey, from left to right, has
recessed 16-pane sash; double door with 3 margined panels in each
leaf, in Tuscan case with half-columns, entablature removed, under
late C19 timber-framed hipped porch; casement of three 6-pane lights;
late C19 framed and boarded door in simple timber case; casement of
three 6-pane lights; boarded door; casement of three 6-pane lights.
Upper storey has 4 similar casements. The sash has wedge lintel, the
casements cambered arches; all have projecting stone cills. Kneelers
and wedge-shaped stone copings to gables; 2 diminishing brick chimneys
on ridge; corbelled diminishing gable chimneys. Left gable-end has
door and recessed 16-pane sash in lower storey; two 12-pane recessed
sashes, with horizontal 6-pane fixed light between, to upper storey.
recessed wing right has boarded door and 3 small windows to lower
storey; casement of three 4-pane lights to upper storey; graded grey
slate roof. Small mid C20 projection in corner between wings.
Interior: Chamfered beam in right room; late Georgian doors including
one of 2 unequal leaves in bar; late Georgian doorcase with gadrooned
architraves and rose at corners in left room; probably reused ovolo
oak beam in back room. The inn retains the character of a true
"public house" with small licensed rooms, some altered in detail.
