Bank, 1901/03 by H. Barnes and Coates (Hartlepool), for York City and
County Banking Co. Ltd. Polished Aberdeen granite ground floor; sandstone
ashlar upper floors; brick stacks and copper lantern on flat asphalt roof.
Occupies corner site with entrance to Exchange Square. Edwardian Baroque.
3 storeys and attic. 7-bay entrance front, slightly-recessed right end and
chamfered left angle bays. 3 steps up to central recessed renewed double
doors,and blind fanlight, in keyed rusticated surround. Wrought iron grille
in tympanum, under blind oculus in enriched scrolled surround, breaking into
tympanum of keyed open-segmental pediment, on consoles enriched with
escutcheons. Recessed fixed-light windows, short iron grilles and curved
aprons, flanked by broad rusticated pilasters supporting entablature, with
renewed signs in frieze. Blocking course with balustraded panels below
first-floor windows. Casement windows on upper floors. Alternately
segmental open-pedimented Roman Ionic surrounds, with enriched tympana, on
first floor. Eared and shouldered architraves under escutcheons on 2nd
floor. Enriched cornice of top entablature, forms gables over scrolled
carved architraves of attic oculi, piercing frieze, in 1st 4th and 7th bays.
Balustraded parapet; 3 stacks. Enriched escutcheon dated 1904, over
architrave of first-floor window in chamfered bay. In right end bay, 3
steps up to part-glazed door with sidelights and fanlight, in rusticated
surround with carved keystone, below oval window in carved surround.
Enriched escutcheon on 2nd floor. Shallow octagonal umbrella-domed lantern,
over left corner. Round-headed half-dormer, with similar oculus in each
face. Enriched escutcheons below windows and at angles. Fleuron roundels
below moulded string course around lower part of drum. Ball finial on
enriched flanged stem. Similar 5-bay left return. INTERIOR: banking hall
has mosaic floors; wood dado panelling with carved cornice; Adam-style
plaster frieze with garlands and drops; and geometric-patterned ceiling with
fruit-and-flower ribs, by W. & S. Wheater (Leeds). Mid/late C20 rear
extensions not of special interest.
