Offices 1937/38 by Graham Dawbarn (London) and Kitching & Co
(Middlesbrough), architects, for Joseph Constantine Shipping Co., Ltd.
Steel framed, with brick cladding and imitation stone dressings. Flat roof
concealed by parapet. L-plan. Jacobethan style. 2 storeys and
deeply-recessed attic storey, 5 bays. Central glazed double doors,
overlight and sidelights, deeply recessed in slightly-shouldered surround of
5 moulded orders. Shouldered tablet, with raised moulded border, linenfold
and Constantine arms above doorway. 2-storey canted bay windows, with
heavily-moulded plinths, flank doorway. Hollow-chamfered-mullioned windows,
with leaded glazing, in double-chamfered surrounds, Tudor-arched on first
floor, 5-light in middle and canted bays, and 2-light in end bays. Broad
square-panelled band, enriched with quatrefoils in lozenges, between floors.
Continuous hoodmoulds. Straight parapet with moulded copings. 2 stacks,
each with 3 corniced octagonal shafts, attached to front of flat-roofed
attic storey. 5-bay right return has similar windows and brick panelled
aprons to first-floor windows. Rear shows 3-stepped stair window with
Tudor-headed lights. INTERIOR: deep dado panelling in stair hall. Oak
open-well staircase has closed string, spiral-twist balusters, chamfered
square newels and moulded handrail ramped at ends. Parged plasterwork in
staircase hall. Late C20 rear extension is not of special interest.
