walls

Clocktower, iron gates and associated piers and walling. Circa 1850. Built for
Charles Lemon. Shale rubble, square-on-plan, in 3 stages with strings dividing
stages. Doorway to east side and clock face surviving to west road side of
middle stage. Upper bell stage has round arched opening to each side and with squat pyramidal stone roof surmounted by weather vane with sailing boat.
Rubble gate-pier to left with original double gates and single gate to right and
rubble pier to right adjoining yard wall of former National School qv. Gates,
and cast-iron fence over right-hand pier, are very fine with scrolled
decoration to lock rail level, square cross braced panels over, quatrefoils to top rail and arrow head finials. To the middle of each gate is the Roman numeral III.
