9/179 Nansidwell Farmhouse and front
- garden walls and pump
GV II
Farmhouse, including front garden walls and pump. C17 or C18, remodelled circa early
C19. Killas rubble and killas rubble walls. Asbestos slate roofs with gable ends.
Large rubble stack over right-hand gable end of main range. Lateral brick chinmey
over rear wall towards left and brick chimney over gable end of secondary range.
Eaves heightened circa early C19.
Plan: Irregular plan with 2 small 2-storey ranges linked by single storey lean-to.
The main range is an irregular T-shaped plan with 2 similar sized rooms at the front
flanking a cross passage (or former through passage) leading to one-room-plan service
wing at right angles behind, towards the right. Thick walls adjoin at either end of
the front of the house; in front of the right-hand wall is a lean-to which is
adjoining a 2 storey one room plan range almost at right angle to the front of the
house. At the front end of this range is a canted probable stair tower. It is
possible that there was once a larger house and the present plan is the result of a
remodelling in circa early C19.
Exterior: 2-storeys. Symmetrical 3 window north-east front with central doorway.
Old ledged door, simple shallow porch with 2 slender pillars. Narrower window
opening over doorway with circa early C19 16-pane hornless sash and similar 20-pane
sashes in other openings. Shallow brick arches over the ground floor windows.
Windows of similar date to left-hand wall, first floor (15-pane sash); 6-pane fixed
light to front of link building and 9-pane fixed light to right-hand side of stair
tower. There is a ledged door to the left-hand wall of the secondary range and a
paired sashed in the right-hand wall inserted circa late C19.
Interior: Not inspected.
Granite coped rubble walls enclose small garden at the front with the house walls
forming 2 of the sides. There is a gateway aligned with the front doorway of the
house and this is approached by a short flight of granite steps. Towards the right
of the front of the house is a probably late C19 cast-iron water pump.
