3/88 Wiggaton Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Circa mid to late C17 extended probably in early C18. Rendered stone
rubble and cob. Steeply pitched rag slate roof with gable ends and asbestos slate
roof to lower range on left with gable ends. Stone rubble end stack on right and
brick shaft to end stack on left.
Plan: Original plan uncertain . Possibly 2-room and cross or through passage plan
with larger hall kitchen on right heated by end stack and smaller unheated room on
left. Extended in circa early C18 with 1-room plan range on left heated by end
stack. The owners state that at some stage the farmhouse was divided into two
although the arrangement is unclear. The farmhouse was remodelled in the mid C19
when the left hand unheated room of the earlier range became the entrance hall and a
stair was inserted against the right hand cross wall between the 2 rooms. The dairy
and back kitchen were probably added to the rear in the mid C19 and a barn was also
added to the rear in the C19 to form an overall 'L' shaped plan.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Regular 2:2 window front with higher earlier range on right
hand side. Windows largely replaced in early C20. To right, 3-light casement in
probably blocked door opening near centre with C20 glazed porch to left and 3-light
casement to right. Two 4-pane sashes on first floor. To left, 3-light casement on
ground floor and two 4-pane sashes on first. Straight joint between 2 ranges evident
on front elevation.
Interior: Earlier range on right has chamfered ceiling beams in right hand room and
C19 kitchen fireplace surround in front of large fireplace. Thin partition between 2
rooms. Left hand room converted to entrance hall with mid C19 stick baluster stair
and slate flag floor. Lower range on left has lower plaster ceiling and C19 chimney-
piece. First floor with circa late C18 plank and muntin screen and several C18
doors. Roof structure above higher right hand range partly replaced with roughly cut
principals and collars. Finer roof construction to left hand range with flush joints
to the halved, lap-jointed and pegged apices.
