NY 15 SE HOLME ABBEY Abbeytown

Parish rooms now shop and Library. Late C19 with 1973 alterations,
incorporating part of the guest house of Holme Cultram Abbey. Squared blocks of
red sandstone in irregular courses. Graduated greenslate roof with coped gables
and kneelers; stone chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 4 bays, with single-bay
extension to left under common roof; angled single-storey passage extension to
right, joining with the porch of the former Abbey, is listed with Church of St
Mary. Plank doors in stone surrounds. Hollow-chamfered 2-light stone mullioned
windows. Shop extension has C20 windows including large shop window in end wall
left. Rear wall of library has part of a chamfered plinth and lower courses of
earlier stonework which could have been a building in the outer court of the
Abbey. Listed partly for G.V. with Church of St Mary.
