5/86 Range of farmbuildings adjoining
- Southwood Farmhouse to the south-
west
GV II
Range of farmbuildings. Mid to late C19, enlarged in the late C19 or early C20.
Some minor late C20 alterations. Snecked squared stone rubble and uncoursed stone
rubble with some rendered cob on rubble plinth, the later parts with some red brick
dressings. Gable-ended Welsh-slate roofs.
Plan: 1-plan range, facing farmyard to the north-east and north-west. Former
outbuilding, probably a former stable, adjoining the house to the south-east, the
left-hand part converted into a kitchen in the late C20. Range of 5 former pigstys
adjoining at right angles to the rear. Range of farmbuildings adjoining the former
stable at right angles to the right consisting of former shippon (or possibly stable)
to left, former linhay to centre and later C19 (see higher ridge-line) shippon
(possibly formerly a stable) to right, with opposed central doors and wing to rear of
right-hand end. One storey and loft.
Exterior: Former stable adjoining the house has a pair of C19 two-light wooden
windows with dressed-stone segmental-arched heads, and central C19 plank door with
pegged wooden frame and dressed-stone segmental-arched head. Range adjoining at
right angles to the right consists of a former shippon/stable to left which has a
central window with stone segmental-arched head flanked by plank doors with stone
segmental-arched heads, central 2 bay linhay (partly blocked by C20 corrugated iron)
with C20 window and plank door with wooden lintel to right, and later C19 shippon to
right which has pair of 2-light wooden casements with brick segmental-arched heads
flanking central plank door, also with brick segmental-arched head. Plank loft door
in right-hand gable end with brick segmental-arched head and side of rear wing has a
pair of large boarded doors with a brick segmental-arched head.
This range of farmbuildings form part of a farmstead group, also including Southwood
Farmhouse and a barn with an adjoining horse-engine house (q.q.v.).
