3/86 Pitt Farmhouse including
adjoining store to
south-west
II
House and adjoining store, formerly cottages and adjoining linhay. Possibly C17
but mostly early and late C19. Plastered cob and rubble with sections built of
brick, rubble or brick stacks topped with late C19 brick; wheat reed thatched
roof. L-shaped building with main block facing south-east and rear block behind
right end. Roof hipped each end. 4-cell front block comprising 2-room house with
end stacks and rear block to right and 2-room store and workshop to left, partly
open fronted. Irregular 4-window front of C19 and C20 wooden casements, all except
one with glazing bars. 3 doors to right of open bay, one to workshop and one to
each domestic room. Left side of house built of late C19 brick and both door and
ground floor window have segmental arch heads. Open-fronted section at left end
shows one full height timber post from former 3-bay linhay, and it seems likely
that adjoining brick section of house encroached into 2 bays of linhay. Plain
carpentry detail inside includes presumably reused C17 scroll-stopped crossbeam to
brick-built cell and several C18 or early C19 plank doors. Originally it seems
right front room and rear block were built as a small farmhouse with adjoining
linhay.
