4.12.86 High Wray House

House. Date stone reads. 'Anthony Wilson and Dorothy His Wife 1728', with
later alterations and C19 additions. Roughcast stone with slate roof. North
west facade of 5 bays, 1st bay is higher, a single storey over cellar set
into slope of ground, breaking forward under gables and corresponding to 1st
floor of rest of house. Projecting single storey wing under asymmetrical
gables, between 1st and 2nd bays. Ground floor has sashed window with gazing
bars to 2nd bay. 3rd and 4th bays have casement windows. 1st floor has sashed
window with glazing bars and margin lights to 1st bay, other bays have C20
wooden cross mullioned windows, chamfered inside, with applied lead strips
to glazing, said to copy original windows. Corbelled gable-end stacks with
round shafts, similar cross-axial stack has 2 round shafts Entrance to 3rd
bay has gabled slate slab porch and 2-panel door; bell on bracket above.
North east facade of one storey and 3 bays, windows are sashed with glazing
bars and margin lights; similar paired doors to central entrance up steps.
South west facade has single storey gabled wing with window to north west.
South east facade of 3 bays, the 3rd bay projecting under gable; sashed windows
with glazing bars, that to 3rd bay with margin light; 2nd bay of ground floor
has entrance with panelled door, and small flanking casement windows. Gable-
end stack with round shaft. Interior has some chamfered beams; iron hooks
in Kitchen ceiling; fielded panel spice cupboard door. Early C18 6-panel
door and 3-pane fielded panel door with narrow central panel. slate shelves
in cellar and water pump in wing. 1st floor has 2-fielded panel doors and
some plank and muntin partitioning, not early. Wooden spiral stair to attic
which has fishbone roof and truss with wooden hook and wide-boarded door with
wood studes, latch and handle strap hinges.
