Farmhouse. C16 or C17, modernised in early C20. Plastered stone rubble, probably
with cob; stone rubble stacks topped with early C20 brick; slate roof, formerly
thatch.
Plan and development: 3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south-south-west
say south. At the left (west) end is an inner room parlour heated by a gable-end
stack. The hall has a projecting rear lateral stack (now disused) and the right
(east) end room, a service end kitchen has a large projecting gable-end stack.
Since no internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not
possible to outline the historic development of the house here. Nevertheless the
C16 or C17 layout appears to be well-preserved and it seems likely that the original
farmhouse was some kind of open hall house, maybe even heated by an open hearth
fire. House is now 2 storeys with secondary service outshots across the rear, that
behind the kitchen is 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 3-window front of C20 casements, the latest without glazing
bars. The passage front doorway is right of centre and contains an early C20 part-
glazed and panelled door behind a C20 gabled porch. Roof is gable-ended.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey. Even so 2
axial beams with broad soffit chamfers of early or mid C17 date were seen in the
kitchen. Also the original layout appears to be essentially intact. The house
might well contain a good deal of C16 or C17 carpentry detail, maybe a late medieval
roof structure.
