Description

CHAWLEIGH
SS 61 SE
1/12 Dart Bridge
-
GV II

Road bridge over River Dart. Circa 1830. Coursed blocks of squared ironstone with
lightly rusticated ashlar detail and granite string course and coping. Vertical
abutments to single high segmental arch in which some of the ashlar voussoirs are
incised to appear as 2 headers for regularity. Flat plain granite coping with
curved weathering. On each side the walls curve outward to terminal piers which
project only externally. The form of bridge is very similar to Lapford Bridge and
Bury Bridge, Morchard Bishop both of which include plaques commemorating their
erection in 1830 by Roger Tyler, builder, for the Trustees of the Exeter Turnpike.
