High House Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Circa early C17 extended in C18. Slatestone rubble walls, partly
slate hung to left-hand end of house. Gable ended slate roof with old crested
ridge tiles at right-hand end. 4 stone rubble stacks with dripcourses to main
range, one at each gable end and 2 axial; there is a further large rubble stack
to the rear leanto at the left-hand end.
Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan although it is possible that the inner room
at the left-hand end was an C18 addition. Hall heated by stack at inner end.
Newel stairs in projection behind lower end which has been subdivided. Original 2
storey porch at front of passage. Probably C18 outshuts built on at rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of mainly C20 2, 3 and 4-light
casements, apart from C20 horizontal sliding 4-pane sash to left of centre on 1st
floor. Gabled 2 storey porch to right of centre with roundheaded doorway and C17
studded door to inner doorway. Threequarters of the front is enclosed by an
original tall courtyard wall to the south with stone coping, central doorway at
the front and one in the rear corner of each side wall. There are steps leading
down the forecourt to the porch with a low wall on each side terminating in a
square pier with flat cap. Rear of house has outshuts to left and right, the
left-hand one incorporating the newel stair projection. On the 1st floor at
centre is original moulded 3-light wooden mullion window.
Interior: passage has original screen to left-hand side comprising tall panels
with shallow ovolo-moulded muntins. The hall has 2 heavy chamfered cross beams
and a fireplace with a granite lintel on moulded stone corbels. There is a C17
moulded wooden doorframe from the passage to the lower end and from the lower end
to the wooden newel stairs. The stair projection has a 2-light moulded wooden
mullion window, now enclosed by the rear leanto. There are several C18 2-panel
doors in the house.
This house not only retains an interesting and unspoilt exterior but also
preserves a number of early features inside.
