This is John Loughborough Pearson's design for the second St Stephen's Church. The nave was erected between 1881and 1883, and the chancel between 1896 and 1897. The spire was not added, it is said this was due to the stability of the land which might have been affected by the cutting and bridging of Braidley Road.

J L Pearson (1817-1897) worked with Anthoy Salvin and Philip Hardwick in London, set out as an independent architect in 1843, FSA 1853, FRIBA 1860, was engaged on the restoration of Lincoln Cathedral in 1870, designed Truro Cathedral 1879-87, gold medallist RIBA 1880, RA 1880, he restored Westminster Hall c.1885, and the north transept of Westminster Abbey, and was also engaged in restorations at Peterborough, Canterbury, Bristol, Rochester, Chichester, and Exeter Cathedrals.
