Description

SP 93 SE WOBURN WOBURN PARK
8/182 Monument to centre of Dogs
Cemetery
- II
Monument to pet dog. Erected 1916 by Mary, Duchess of Bedford. Inscriptions
read:
Che Foo (Wuzzy), December 1904 - July 28 1916
When the body that lived at your single will,
When the wimper of welcome is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
In life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart was ever all her own,
Who laboured, fought, lived, breathed for her alone.
Ashlar, artificial stone and metal. Takes form of small circular temple in
loosely classical style. 2-stage circular base. 6 composite columns on
rectangular plinths. Plinths have moulded decorations, mostly of military
emblems and trophies. Columns have bands of moulded decoration at mid point.
Cornice has moulded swag decoration. Surmounting temple is open wrought
ironwork dome with finial. In centre of temple is moulded and inscribed
rectangular plinth supporting small cast metal figure of dog.
