23.1.61 Chinese Pavilion, at
centre of maze

Garden building in form of small Chinese Temple. Circa 1833, based on a
design from Sir William Chambers' Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture,
Dresses, Machines and Utensils, of 1757. Erected for John 6th Duke of
Bedford. Painted timber and metal. Single-storeyed, octagonal structure.
Stands on raised stone floor, paved in octagonal pattern in 2 types of stone.
8 columns with moulded base support pagoda style roof. Fretwork panels below
eaves link the columns. Balustrading between columns on alternate sides also
formed by fretwork panels. Roof is surmounted by central octagonal lantern,
also with fretwork sides and canopied roof. Suspended from each angle of main
roof and lantern roof are glass bells, alternatively red and blue. Whole
structure covered with painted decoration, predominantly in red, yellow and
green, that to ceiling imitating bamboo-work.
