C17 buildings. The facade to the street, which is tile-hung, is defaced
by modern shop-fittings. A tall carriageway leads back to the yard of
the Honour of Ampthill offices. On the west side, Charles II work includes
a 2-storey brick range (early use of Flemish bond) with shaped stringcourse
and 5 windows (some sashed, some casements) also a long barn, partly of
brick (English bond) and partly half-timbered with plaster infilling, in
which the revenues of the Honour were received. This barn still carries
a large moulded plaster plaque:- 'W H' being the initials of William Hart,
the receiver on account of the queen dowager (Henrietta Maria), who is
indicated by her fleur-de-lys. On the East side are remains of late C18
buildings for storage, including one one-storey building in brick chequered
in blue with 2 doors, and 4 small round-headed casement windows. See VCH,
