THRELKELD,
Building 35 metres west of Threlkeld Parish Church
G.V.
II
Formerly a house (Although not used as such since the mid C19), now (June 1989)
derelict. Partly C16 with C17 and later alterations. Random rubble with graduated Cumbrian slate gable-end roof. Single storey with loft. PLAN: now 2 units
but possibly originally 3 (the cruck now stands at the extreme west end of the
building adjacent to the end wall and - as it appears to be in situ - the likelihood is that the house extended one bay or more to the west).
EXTERIOR: north
(roadside), one low entrance with massive cambered lintel, window (now boarded
up) with large lintel and C19 frame; tall C19 doorway to right with boarded
stable-type doors. Rear elevation, partially collapsed (and exposing south
cruck blade); clear masonry joint marking division between the two rooms. 2
windows, one set low under cambered lintel; later doorway to left. Single
window to west end wall.
INTERIOR: stone dividing wall between the 2 rooms not
bonded in to main walls; full cruck, collar, trenches for saddle and spur ties;
roof with ridge piece and side purlins. At the east end a large internal stone
stack with massive bressumer; this is a good example of the phase in fireplace
development that followed (or improved upon) the timber smoke hood. Remains of
loft floor supported in part on fireplace bressumer. NOTE: in 1634 this
property was known as Church Stile Tenement and stood on the edge of the former
open field.
