Detached house. Late C14, rebuilt C16 and C17. Dressed
limestone, tiled roof, axial stone stack with offsets, external
stone stack to rear wing. Eight-bay house with 3-bay former open
hall, C17 rear wings enclosing courtyard on three sides. Two
storey, 5-window west front. C20 glazed door and 5-light recessed
chamfered mullioned casement to right, straight joint to left of
door with 2-light mullioned casement, C16 two-light mullioned
casement with arched lights and 3-light mullioned casement to left.
First floor has C20 three-light mullioned casement, two 2-light
mullioned casements, 3-light and 5-light mullioned casements. Two
bays to right are addition of c1600. Left return is windowless,
C17 rear wing to north has 3-light and 2-light casements. South
rear C17 wing is 2-storey with 2 and 3-light ovolo-mullioned
casements, full dormer to south, east gable end has 2-storey bay
with ovolo-mullioned casements, north side has large stone external
stack with offsets. Rear of main range has chamfered stone
doorway and mullioned casements, C16 round-headed casement to first
floor.
Interior retains some late Medieval features such as hall fireplace
with cusped panels and spandrels to Tudor-arched surround, this
stack an insertion to open hall. Four roof trusses survive from
late C14; arch-braced open collar trusses to former hall with
curved wind bracing, butt purlins and chamfered soffits. Of c1600
are Tudor-arched stone fireplaces in south bays, ovolo-moulded
wooden doorway to south room on ground floor and two south bays of
roof trusses. South wing has good dog leg stairs with turned
balusters to closed string, square newels with finials and wide
handrail, probably early C17. Chamfered elliptical headed stone
archways between main range and south wing.
