Description

CROFT-ON-TEES RICHMOND ROAD
NZ 2809-2909
(west side, off)
10/43 Outbuilding approximately
6 metres south of Old Spa
Villa

GV II

Building associated with Spa, now garage. Possibly c1808, for Sir William
Chaytor. Rendered, with red sandstone ashlar dressings, C20 clay pantile
roof. Single storey, 1:1:1 bays, the centre bay breaking forward slightly.
Gothick style. Large chamfered rusticated quoins to all bays. In each bay
a pointed-arched opening with hoodmould, in the centre boarding imitating a
door, in the outer bays, sash windows with intersecting glazing bars at the
top. The roof, which may have been raised slightly, is slightly raised over
central bay. Present entry through large doors in right return. The Old
Spa was developed as a watering place from 1808, and this building may have
been the first bath-house. T A Littleton, "Cure-All?", Richmond and
District Civic Society Annual Report (1982), pp 25-7.
