House. Early C19. For Sir William Chaytor, possibly by Ignatius Bonomi.
Brown brick, C20 concrete interlocking tile roof. 1 and 2 storeys,
2:3:2 bays, with rear outshut to central 2-storey range, which has first-
floor string and eaves band. All openings have flat brick arches. In
central bay, recessed blocked doorway, with blind window above. Sash
windows with glazing bars and ashlar sills. Hipped roof with central stack.
Outer bays, single-storey pavilions, with inner board door below 3-pane
overlight, and window as before; roofs hipped to outer ends, end stack to
left. A few metres away the sulphurous spring discharges into the stream.
The Old Spa was developed as a watering place from 1808, although the waters
