(Formerly listed as Netherside Hall, B6160 (east side, off))
II
Country house. c1820 possibly by George Webster of Kendal, for Alexander Nowel. Coursed rubble and ashlar, graduated grey slate roof.
In Jacobethan style, the main block of two storeys with attics and 5 x 4 bays, the outer bays gabled and projecting slightly, the central bay overlain by a single-storey porch of three round arches; strapwork parapet coping flanking a circular plaque carved with the badge of the Nowel family; scroll and pyramid finials.
Recessed service range to left of two storeys and two long bays. Central studded door with shallow triangular head and hoodmould. Mullion and transom windows of two and three-lights to ground and first floors, two-light windows to attics, all with deep hoodmoulds. Kneelers, tall pyramidal finials, tall multiflue stacks grouped across and behind ridge around the central three bays.
Rear: the house stands on the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the river Wharfe, the ground slope allows an extra basement storey to rear; there is a central canted bay with six-light mullion and transom windows rising through three storeys.
Interior: the entrance is into a vestibule, now partitioned, with a large square inner hall decorated with fielded panels. A large plain stone fireplace against the left wall, and doors throughout of three rows of four recessed panels; a first floor balcony with cast-iron balustrade in arcaded design; moulded wooden handrail. The hall is lit by a large lantern window. The stone staircase is to left of the hall; it is cantilevered and of three straight flights, having plain square-section iron bannisters and a wooden handrail; it rises to the attic storey.
Alexander Nowel was born in 1761 in Lancashire and in 1783 joined the British army in India. In 1792 he left the army to concentrate on the production of indigo dye. He returned to England in 1805, his family left Gawthorpe Hall and he rented the land at Netherside Wood which belonged to the Atkinson family of Linton House (q.v.), building Netherside Hall in 1820-22. The estate of 31 acres appears to have been leased for 60 years at 40/- per year. Alexander died at Netherside in 1842. Information from records at Netherside Hall.
