Hall, now school. Early C17 core with later C17 service crosswing;
refronted and second crosswing added, c1700; C19 alterations and extension;
extended, remodelled and reversed c1928. Red brick in English garden wall
bond; sandstone dressings; pantile roof. Main range with staircase tower
and crosswings. Main front (c1700): 3-storey, 3-bay front, 1:3:1, flanked
by crosswing gables, Quoined ground floor extended forward in 1928 with
former front re-used. Centre bay, defined by raised quoins, breaks forward.
Central half-glazed and panelled door with divided overlight approached by
stone steps, in eared architrave with pulvinated frieze and pediment over
cornice. 12-pane sashes with moulded stone sills in keyed architraves
throughout. Segmental pediment to centre bay over first and second floor
windows in keyed, eared architraves. Chamfered plinth band; cornice bands
at second floor and eaves levels; plain parapet; hipped roof. Coped gables,
kneelers and end stacks to crosswing gables. Entrance front (originally
rear): 2-storey and attic, 3-bay front, flanked by crosswing gables linked
by C20 3-bay arcade. Centre gabled staircase tower contains later inserted
part-glazed and panelled door, and 12-pane first floor sash, both in C20
enriched stone architraves. Second floor sash beneath round-headed brick
arch. 12-pane sashes under thin timber lintels to either side. Floral and
foliate moulded guttering of late C19 runs above ground floor windows and on
each side of door. C20 dormers to mansard roof. Tumbled brick gable and
stack. C20 Dutch gables to crosswing end walls. Garden front: 2-storeys.
Extended to left in C19 with 2-storey canted bay. 12-pane sashes with
gauged brick arches to roof hipped to left. Interior: C17 closed string,
dogleg, staircase to tower with turned balusters and moulded handrail.
Early Cl8 staircase reset at end of C18 wing with carved, closed string,
barley-sugar and vase balusters; moulded handrail ramped-up to half landing
and first floor. Bolection moulded panelling at foot of stairs. Bolection
moulded panelling to centre room of C18 crosswing. C20 school buildings to
north of Hall not of special interest.
