18/18 The Old Forge
GV II
Forge, C18, probably circa 1823, with additions, formerly worked by
water-power. Herringbone-tooled coursed sandstone; pantiled roof
with stone ridge, copings and stacks. 1-storey, 3 bays. Central
cart entrance with inserted garage-type overhead door. Flanking
blacksmith's windows. Rear elevation shows catslide extension at
right holding gearhouse for machinery and small stable far right.
Remains of waterwheel attached to gearhouse, and fragmentary walls
of disused mill race. Centre and end coped chimneys.
Interior: Large fixed bellows and furnace at either end. Setpot
and water inflow to right of right-hand furnace. An unusually
well-preserved example, although original moulding house has been
lost by incorporation into neighbouring modern house.
