Large house in 2 occupations. 1718 for Michael Gibson. Hammer-dressed stone,
stone slate roof. Irregular plan of 4 bays to south front central 2 bays formed
by open hall and right hand gabled cross-wing. Outer bays formed by added
gabled cross-wings which break forward and probably date from the early C18
rebuilding onto an earlier C17 house in the central bays. 2nd bay has tall
8-light chamfered mullioned and transomed hall window with square reveals, and
cross-window (probably fire window). Parapet formed by 3 courses of ashlar.
3rd bay is set back and has doorway without jambs with sash window over and
parapet joining on to coped gable with lantern finial. Large sash window of 3
lights to each floor of C19 character. 4th bay breaks forward and has parapet
on the return wall to similar gable which has slight cruciform window (C19) with
3-light sash window over. 1st bay has parapets to return walls and is taller
than other bays and retains large chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with
square reveals of 10 lights to each floor with string course over. Coped gable
with lantern finials with rain water head initialled 'MGE' others bear date
1718. Left hand return wall has continuation of string and 2 course parapet.
Main entrance of late C19 set centrally with a long portico with open arcades,
square columns with large finial cappings, blocking course and flat roof.
Doorway has basket arched lintel with deeply sunk spandrels and moulded
composite jambs with decorative stop. Over is large 10-light mullioned and
transomed window set with stained glass panels collected from the district.
Rear of cross-wing has large full height 2 5-light window set in 5 rows of 5
lights with transoms. This lights open hall With gallery and fine carved
woodwork. 2 stacks to cross-wing have sunken blind arcades in their faces.
Several other stacks, that to hall range indicating a hearth passage plan.
