Barn. Mid C16 and late C17. Timber-framed and brick with a stone slate roof.
West front, former central cart entry now in fourth bay, has scarf-jointed
lintel with mortice holes, and post to north stop-chamfered on inner-edge
suggesting it has been turned, double boarded doors. To left 3 rectangular
ventilators and curved corner at north-west angle. To right single ventilator
and low attached stone building with former doorway, with composite jambs and
timber lintel, blocked to window by C20 brick. Rear front has tall cart entry
with chamfered posts, with run-out stops and timber lintel with round-hole
socket for harr-hung doors. Cart entry set within aisle at arcade-plate
position. Brick aisles break forward. 2 ventilators to the right and low stone
cattle shed at right angles. To left, 2 larger blocked openings. Attached to
right-hand return wall is low stable with brick wall to east side and opposing
doorway, with timber lintel. Re-used oak tie-beam probably taken from barn.
INTERIOR: 5-bay double-aisled, reduced from former 7 bays. 3 king-post trusses
with single angle struts straight braced to ridge, former closing truss at north
end has 3 vertical infilling struts to either side of broad king post. The
north bay is late C17 extension as arcade-plate stops at this point. All 4
trusses are carried on oak posts with jowelled heads and curved braces to tie
beams and plate standing on padstones. Aisle-ties have principal rafter carrying
another purlin on western side, ties sit on deep wall plate with peg-holes
indicating the former position of outside wall. Eastern aisle appears altered
in C17, the former aisle posts replaced by C17 brick pillars.
