Farmhouse, now two dwellings. C17 or earlier; altered. Stone with roughcast
render, stone slate roof. L-plan: linear 3-unit range with rear outshut
(No.4) with receding wing at right-hand end (No. 5). Two storeys; 1st unit
(left end of No.4) formerly byre, altered and incorporated in house;
remainder has C20 bay windows at ground floor and door between, all under
mono-pitched stone slate roof; blocked window above door, and C20 casements
at 1st floor; stone copings to left gable, ridge chimney and 2 other
chimneys behind ridge. Wing (No.5) has stone gable coping with kneelers, a
large C20 casement on each floor of the gable end and similar casement in the
2-bay return wall, a door at the junction of the bays; 2 ridge chimneys.
(Modern addition to the rear not included in the item).
Interior: altered, but No. 4 has timber-framed arcade partition between
housepart and outshut in 2nd bay: 2 posts exposed, with high stone
stylobates, arcade plate, and angle-braces, with light studs on a rail
beneath the arcade plate; and arched brick fireplace (restored); No. 5 (wing)
has exposed king-post roof truss, but is otherwise altered.
History: birthplace of Richard Bentley (1662-1742), scholar and divine;
Master of Trinity College, Cambridge 1700-34.
