House, now two dwellings. Late C18, altered in 1881, but with earlier core
to rear. Handmade red brick and late C19 polychrome brick, both in Flemish
bond (front) and coursed squared sandstone (rear), with stone slate roofs.
Double-depth plan incorporating the earlier building in the rear, the
continuation of this having been used as a service wing to the C18 house.
Two storeys and three bays, with large cellars throughout the C18 part;
symmetrical facade with 2-storey canted bays added to each side in 1881;
central doorway with architrave of pilasters and open pediment with dentils,
glazed and panelled door, fanlight with intersecting tracery; C19 twelve-pane
sashed window above this and three similar windows on each floor of the bays;
dentilled cornice, low parapet, hipped roof with ridge chimneys. Return wall
of receding left wing, 2 bays, with rusticated quoins to the rear corner and
large Venetian stairlight. Rear of sandstone, 2 lower storeys, with openings
of less interest.
Interior: entrance hall from garden front has a screen with elliptical arch
and fluted Tuscan columns in antis, triglyphed entablature; dog-leg staircase
with open string, scrolled treads, 2 slim balusters per tread, and wreathed
handrail; very large cellars, with stone wine bins.
