Pair of attached houses. Early C17, with additions of late C17 - early C18, C19 and
later alterations. Painted slatestone rubble. Concrete tiled roof with gable ends.
Gable end stacks with brick shafts and axial stack with weathered rubble shaft.
Plan: Westways is to left, and the second house is attached to right. Westways is of
2-room plan, with unusually wide passage, small room to left and large room to right,
each room heated from a stack at the gable end. The house to right has probably
added circa late C17 - early C18 ; it is of one-room plan, with an entrance to a
passage to left, the room to right heated from a gable end stack. Later rear
outshuts.
Exterior: Westways is 2-storey, asymmetrical 2-window front. Ground floor has C18
plank door with glazed panel ; C19 20-pane sash to right with external shutters. At
first floor above the door is a C19 2-light 8-pane casement, 2-light C20 casement at
first floor to right. The wall steps back to the end bay to left with C20 2-light
casement at ground floor with external shutters. The wall steps back to right to the
attached house ; C20 glazed door, and 2 C20 2-light casements at ground floor, two 2-
light 8-pane casements at first floor. Right end blind. At the right side is a
straight joint to the single storey outshut. At the rear, the single storey outshut
has slurried slate roof along the whole of the rear of the attached house and behind
the passage and large room of Westways, with 5 C20 windows. The rear of the smaller
room of Westways has a C20 window at ground floor.
Interior: Westways has a passage with 4 beams, chamfered with run-out stops ; stud
partition to the room to left and C19 wooden partition to the room to right. The
room to left has one chamfered beam, timber lintel remaining from the early fireplace
with C20 fireplace inserted ; coffin hatch in the ceiling. The room to right has
fireplace with timber lintel, chamfered with scroll stops ; later beams, not
chamfered. Splayed reveal to front window. At first floor the feet of the principal
rafters are boxed in, roof space not accessible.
