Almshouses, now 11 dwellings. Dated 1863, built for John Eden (plaque on
central bay); later C19 rear outshut. Tooled ashlar sandstone, graduated
green slate roof and ashlar chimney stacks. Stretched E-plan. Tudor-Gothic
style.
2 storeys; symmetrical 7-bay front and one-bay return wings. Slightly-projecting
centre bay and wings have shaped gables. 3 slightly-projecting window bays with
half dormers flanking centre; identical bay on inner return of each wing.
Mullioned windows in double-chamfered surrounds. Centre bay: Tudor-arched
doorway and flanking sashes under continuous hoodmould; plaque above door
inscribed: 1863 BUILT AND ENDOWED BY JOHN EDEN; 2-light window above plaque
under pointed hoodmould. Flanking 3-bay sections and inner returns of wings;
replaced doors and 2-light windows, with 2-pane sashes, under continuous
hoodmoulds; hoodmoulds stepped over windows and forming pointed arches enclosing
trefoils over doors; gabled half dormers with 2-light windows. External chimney
with offsets and paired octagonal-plan stacks on gable end of each wing.
Steeply-pitched roof: 4 cross-axial ridge chimneys, each with 4 conjoined
octagonal-plan stacks. Narrow added single-storey outshut on rear has seven
4-panel doors and 2-light windows with replaced casements; tall stack rising
through centre of pent roof.
A well-detailed and unaltered example.
