Built c1709 for H Spendlove, an attorney, as a speculation. 2 storeys in red
brick with painted stone. Rusticated quoins. Brick eaves cornice. Hipped roof
with machine tiles. 4 windows wide, hung sashes with glazing bars. Doorcase of
c.1785 has applied attenuated Doric columns, entablature and shaped bracketed
pediment. Heavy oak 6-panel door with brass bacchante head knocker and semi-
circular fanlight. Wrought iron guard rails and scrapers. Heavy projecting
base with stone coping. Attached later wing has arched doorway and modern garage
doors below 2 windows and blind panel to 1st floor. Picturesque garden
elevation. Interior preserves panelled rooms to 1st floor and staircase with
heavily twisted balusters. Formerly the town house of the Constables of Wassand.
